A MAN, who was jailed for 15 years for killing his father while being intoxicated from sniffing a cleaning product, has lost his final appeal.
Nooh Ali Saif, 59, suffered fatal knife wounds to his chest and back in the attack in his home in Muharraq on October 21, 2017 and died of his injuries at King Hamad University Hospital, Busaiteen.
The 33-year-old Bahraini defendant had pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and using drugs.
However, he was jailed for 15 years by the High Criminal Court in November 2018.
He filed an appeal against his conviction at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court which was rejected in the same year.
He then filed a final appeal at the Cassation Court which yesterday upheld his initial sentence.
The defendant, who killed his father while being high on cleaning product called Stop, lost his final appeal due to sufficient evidence presented against him, according to the ruling.
“The defendant was found guilty of the charges due to sufficient evidence against him,” read the Cassation Court ruling.
“The defendant stormed into the kitchen and grabbed a knife while he was high on a cleaning product.
“The defendant’s sister tried to stop him but he stabbed his father in the chest.
“He then stabbed him a second time while the latter was crawling in the yard.
“Medics arrived but they said that they could not revive the victim.”
The defendant’s mother previously requested murder charges against her son to be dropped as he was intoxicated at the time of the crime.
She earlier described to judges when she took to the stand how his addiction to sniffing a cleaning product, named Stop, caused him to kill his father.
The GDN earlier reported that the accused underwent a psychiatric evaluation after his lawyer claimed he was mentally ill.
A medical report said the defendant was fit to stand trial.
In a report submitted to the court, a medical panel at the Psychiatric Hospital said the defendant should be held responsible for his actions since he did not suffer from any mental illness.
The defendant earlier told prosecutors he killed his father after he “lost control of his senses” by sniffing aerosol.
He also previously claimed his father was drunk when he started insulting him for sniffing Stop.
He said he initially intended to stab his brother who he accused of mocking him for the scolding he received from his father.
Court documents exclusively obtained by the GDN showed the accused held the same knife to his mother’s neck before running after his father and stabbing him.
