MANAMA: Large quantities of meat are available in the market in preparation for Eid Al Fitr, with a 60 per cent increase in the supply of fresh produce.
Bahrain’s local markets are also adequately supplied with rice, legumes, flour, oil and dairy products, said Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) food wealth committee chairman Khalid Al Ameen.
He also dismissed the possibility of any shortage of food items.
“Local markets are ready to receive Eid with an ample supply of basic food items that are all reasonably priced,” he said.
“The meat market is also prepared to receive customers with large quantities offered during the days leading up to Eid and during the three Eid days.
“Our markets have prepared adequately to receive Eid this year which is also due to a large amount of suppliers and a diversity in country of origin.”
He said the market began preparations for Eid a week ago and predicted a moderate buying power this year.
He added that meat suppliers have imported livestock from several countries such as Somalia, Pakistan, Australia, Sudan along with local animals.
“This week is the peak for red meat demand, so it is expected that prices may change based on supply and demand with an expected demand between 5,000 to more than 10,000 heads of livestock in the three days of Eid,” he said.
“There are also daily consignments of fresh produce – both chilled and regular – coming into Bahrain and they are expected to reach up to 80 consignments before Eid.”
According to Mr Al Ameen, fresh produce is imported from Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Australia and India among other countries.
He also highlighted that the demand for local Bahraini chicken exceeds the supply leading to consumers purchasing Saudi chickens to cover the decrease in local production.
