MANAMA: Bahrain was yesterday praised for setting an example of dealing with Covid-19 and its impact on human mobility by a top UN official.
International Organisation for Migration (IOM) chief António Vitorino praised measures taken by the kingdom to deal with illegal workers during the pandemic.
The UN watchdog, which is based in Switzerland, “applauds Bahrain’s efforts to regularise the status of 17,000 migrant workers waiving all fines and residency fees,” Mr Vitorino said in a tweet.
“The country has set an example that proves there are effective ways to deal with Covid-19 and its impact on human mobility.”
While uncertainty amidst the pandemic is understandable, xenophobia and racism against migrants undermine our response to Covid-19, the IOM said on its website. “Many governments have set positive examples to ensure that migrants are included as part of their comprehensive response to Covid-19.”
