EFFORTS are underway to finalise the sale of fishermen’s assets, said a top government official dismissing allegations of a deliberate delay in the process.
According to Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry’s agriculture and marine resources Under-Secretary Dr Nabeel Abu Al Fateh, there was a slight delay in the process due to the crisis surrounding the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
He pointed out that claims about the directorate delaying the process intentionally were incorrect as financial compensation was distributed to fishermen opting to sell their assets months ago.
“Work is underway to complete the certificates to prove the sale of the assets as well as turning shrimping licences to fishing licences and buying their equipment and dhows,” he said in a statement yesterday.
“The delay in the process was due to precautionary measures in place to combat the Covid-19 pandemic and limit its spread.
“These efforts continue to ensure the livelihood of the fishermen as well as their rights while work progresses to enhance the fishing sector in Bahrain within efforts to ensure food security.”
