A VIDEO circulating on social media of a dog killing a cat in front of a shop in Gudaibiya has sparked outrage among animal lovers in Bahrain.
Legal action will likely be taken against the dog’s owner who stood by while his pitbull savaged a woman’s pet without attempting to prevent it.
The video showed the man standing idly by while his pitbull ripped apart the cat while the woman tried to free it from its jaws using a metal rod.
“This cruelty is inexcusable and it needs to be punished to the full extent of the law,” said Bahrain Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) chairman Mahmood Faraj.
“This man is fully aware of what is happening and is responsible for his dog’s behaviour. He should have had it muzzled or at least tried to prevent it from killing the cat, instead of just standing there stoically.
“This is a disaster and imagine the catastrophe that could have happened if this dog had attacked a child in the same way it went after the cat?”
“This wasn’t an accident as he is just standing there and we have submitted the video to the Capital Governorate Police and it will hopefully be referred to the Public Prosecution.”
He told the GDN that the cat’s owner was asked to submit a full report to the police for the legal process to begin.
He highlighted that the video, which was sent to him late on Tuesday, clearly showed the man’s face which should help in the process of identifying the dog owner and ensure he is held accountable for what happened.
Meanwhile, Mr Faraj also told the GDN about a small four-month-old female monkey that was illegally put up for sale on Instagram for BD100.
“We immediately contacted the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) as soon as we saw the post and they will rescue the monkey,” he added.
“Although the monkey isn’t a protected animal it is still illegal to sell or buy one because it is an ‘exotic animal’ and we are always in close contact with the SCE whenever we come across such incidents.
“Once the monkey has been rescued legal proceedings will be taken to refer the case to the Public Prosecution.”
