The role of the media, including social media, is to be an effective means of communication between members of society and to convey to them information, facts and ideas related to all social, political, economic and other aspects.
These modern methods have made us aware of what is happening around us. Needless to say such media have a very strong influence on us as individuals and society.
Bahrain’s Information Ministry is making efforts to guard against rumours and bust conspiracies against the country and, with the availability of so many media, this is a critical role to play.
I recently discovered Radio Bahrain has a frequency (102.7 FM) that used to broadcast football matches. I have never been able to understand the logic of broadcasting such coverage on Friday mornings, of all the days. I am still wondering how this would benefit the listener.
To get to the bottom of this, I asked an official in the Information Ministry and was told this is one of the frequencies given to the ministry and so was broadcasting football games.
I found this justification totally irrational and insulting rather than beneficial, as I did not see any use for it in any way.
Why not devote the frequency to educational, religious, musical and other informative programmes? As far as I know, Bahrain Radio has a well-stocked archive to choose from.
Let us always remember that the media is a double-edged sword, so we must use it in a correct and professional manner. It is possible for example, but not limited to, to make a questionnaire for listeners to get acquainted with their suggestions and ideas, since the radio programmes are directed to them.
These ideas should then be studied, analysed and cleared by specialists until a final decision, that will inevitably be correct, is taken.
The media, in its various forms and types, are among the most important things in a country that states may build upon or be destroyed.
I hope that the officials will consider my suggestions with openness since we are all soldiers of this dear homeland, and we always care about public interest.
