Manama: His Majesty King Hamad yesterday hailed Bahrain’s historical ties with Egypt and vowed to bolster military co-operation.
He also promised to build 30 Azhari institutes across Egypt as part of a drive to support Al Azhar’s efforts to spread its message of moderation, peaceful co-existence and tolerance.
The King yesterday visited the Egyptian Defence Ministry where he was received by Minister of Defence and Military Production, Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces Lt Gen Sedki Sobhi, chief of staff Major General Mahmoud Hejazi and senior officials.
He hailed efforts of the military, led by President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, to unite Arab and Islamic nations and defend their crucial causes and interests.
His Majesty stressed the importance of bolstering military ties. He highlighted the memorandum of understanding signed between the BDF General Command and Egyptian Armed Forces, which will strengthen defence co-operation.
The King commended the Egyptian Armed Forces for taking part in Operation Decisive Storm and Operation Restoring Hope in Yemen and the massive North Thunder drill.
He reiterated Bahrain’s support for President Al Sisi’s initiative and the Arab League Resolution to establish a pan-Arab force to stave off threats.
Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr Ahmed Al Tayeb thanked His Majesty for his initiative to build Azhari schools and said it reflects Bahrain’s support for Al Azhar Al Sharif and Arab causes.
His Majesty yesterday wrapped up his official visit to Egypt during which he held talks with President Al Sisi on latest regional developments. He was seen off by Minister of Petroleum, head of Mission of Honour Tarak Al Mulla, Bahrain’s Ambassador to Cairo Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa and officials.
His Majesty arrived in Sharm El Sheikh last night, where he was welcomed by South Sinai Governor Major General Khaled Fouda.
The King will tour tourism landmarks.
