It’s hard to tell if “Worried” and “Still Worried”, (GDN, July 21) is a hoaxter or just badly misinformed.
“Still Worried”, perhaps misspelled macular degeneration (it’s not molecular), which is a very serious eye condition. It also seems that you may have been thinking about cataracts, which can be worsened by exposure to sunlight and UV radiation, although other conditions, such as diabetes, can cause it. If you are experiencing eye problems, you should see an eye specialist and not rely on the opinion page for advice.
As for “Worried”, fear not. Weasels (mink) and rats are not at all related. Rats are rodents, and mink are (carnivorous) mustelids. Reports of mink having Covid-19 are due to them being in close contact with humans on fur farms. In the past, rats were most famously linked with the bubonic plague, but it was by being host to fleas that spread it. While rats many still be a nuisance, there is so far no evidence that they carry or spread Covid-19.
