TWO men who attacked four people with a sickle following a brawl at a labour camp in Manama have been jailed for three years each.
The Bangladeshi defendants appeared at the High Criminal Court yesterday where they previously denied attempted murder and assault.
They were jailed for three years each, while a third man, a fellow national, was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
The defendants were arrested after they attacked their Pakistani victims with planks in a bloody brawl that took place on August 23 last year.
A 29-year-old defendant, who has been found guilty, also attacked the four victims, including two brothers, with a sickle leaving one of them (a 21-year-old) in a critical condition, following a severe neck injury, in the intensive care unit at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC).
“Two of the defendants carried out the attack and have been found guilty of the charges,” read the court ruling yesterday.
“They went to a labour camp where the victims lived and attacked them with wooden planks.
“One of them struck a 21-year-old with a sickle in his neck. They punched him in the face and blood was gushing from his neck.”
The court ruled that victims’ testimonies and evidence submitted by prosecutors were sufficient to find two defendants guilty.
The third was however acquitted due to lack of evidence against him.
The 21-year-old victim earlier described the brutal attack by the 29-year-old defendant.
“On the day of the incident, I was with my friends (the three other victims) and a fight erupted between them and a group of Bangladeshi men (the defendants),” he said in his statement to prosecutors.
“However, the fight ended and everyone returned home.
“But later on that day one of them (the 29-year-old defendant) struck me with a sickle in the neck.
“Blood was gushing from my neck and the defendant punched me in the face as I was bleeding.
“He then struck my friend (a 24-year-old victim) on his left hand and he was bleeding.
“He also attacked my other friend (a victim, aged 26) on his right hand and he too was bleeding.
“All the defendants attacked us with wooden planks and my brother (a victim, aged 27) tried to help me before the 29-year-old struck him with the sickle in his chest.”
