The surge of coronavirus infections witnessed following public holidays and religious ceremonies, gave a staggering blow to the government’s efforts to contain it. It results in unnecessary financial cost in testing, tracing and treatment efforts.
And any campaign irrespective of its dimension, financial backing and academic input is more likely to fail if the public is not actively involved. The reckless activities of individuals and failure to abide by precautionary measures and instructions given by Health Ministry officials are costing us a fortune and will probably, God forbid, cost human lives as well.
The ministry has warned people in advance to take responsibility to that effect but what we are observing is people simply ignoring precautionary measures.
Last week, the Health Ministry reported 662 new cases, the highest in three months, (GDN, September 5). It mentioned failure to abide by social distancing rules during family visits and gatherings without wearing masks. It implies the public has not done what is expected of them and in fact betrayed the government’s efforts.
It is our social responsibility to stick to the health rules, to keep Covid-19 at bay and we can be back to our daily activities in the near future. By ignoring the ministry’s instructions, we are prolonging the sufferings of society in terms of health, economy and extending lockdowns, which no body desires.
China and other advanced countries including Italy and Spain, which witnessed big increases in coronavirus infections early in the year, abided by strict social distancing and wearing protective gears and brought the infection rates to a minimum, and almost returned to normal life activities.
So, what prevents us from following in their footsteps? It doesn’t require an additional budget or advanced equipment! Please, let’s abide by the rules.
