Last week the Saudi Arabian government suspended the opening of government schools by seven weeks after sensing that the Covid-19 infection still remains high in society. Similarly, the UAE switched to e-learning after suspected cases of Covid-19 were discovered among administrative staff.
And now Bahrain’s turn has come and due to the increase of corona infections of late, government school openings have been postponed by two weeks to get teachers and administrative staff tested for Covid-19.
Earlier in the month, a school in Germany closed after suspected cases of coronavirus were found among students, on the first day of opening. Stories like these are too much. The only success story is the decision of the University of Bahrain to remain online for the rest of the academic year (2020-2021).
Likewise, the Education Ministry should think of going online at least for the first semester of the coming academic year. That is what most scientists are advising. The deadly virus is around, it is with us!
God forbid, if one student is found to be positive for the virus in our schools, parents will never send their children to schools.
So, I think it is better to deliver teaching on the online platform and monitor the infection rate before a decision is made to call students to schools.
The problem is not with the virus, it is with us. We failed to follow the Health Ministry’s instructions – abide by social distancing and wear face masks. Scientists have warned a long time ago that the virus will be with us for a considerable period and that it is too early to socialise.
