Kuwait City: Kuwait has conducted its first caesarean operation on a woman infected with the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19).
“The first caesarean operation was performed on a coronavirus patient on the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)," obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Maryam Al Mansoori confirmed on her Twitter page.
"May God bless your efforts and help you carry on with confidence, Dr Hanan Al Khatlan and Dr Alia Tahu.”
EMCO is similar to the heart-lung bypass machine used in open-heart surgery.
It pumps and oxygenates a patient’s blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest.
Also known as extracorporeal life support, ECMO is an extracorporeal technique providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support for persons whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange or perfusion to sustain life.
