LAWYERS will submit their final arguments in the trial of 18 people accused of being part of a terrorist group that planned attacks across the country.
The Bahraini defendants, aged between 16 and 36, are standing trial at the High Criminal Court, charged with possessing explosives and receiving militia training abroad.
However, only nine men, who are in custody, appeared at the court yesterday where defence witnesses took to the stand. Nine others, who are at large, are being tried in absentia.
The trial has been adjourned until Monday for lawyers to present their final arguments.
According to court documents, the accused tried to detonate explosives outside the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) headquarters in Adliya, Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre, Sanabis and an oil pipeline in Hamala.
Authorities confiscated C4 explosives and claymores found at a house in Saar belonging to a 24-year-old defendant.
The group is said to be a part of Saraya Al Ashtar (Al Ashtar Brigades).
Four alleged masterminds, including Alsayed Murtadha Al Sindi who was branded a global terrorist by the US in 2017, are said to have headed the group.
The 36-year-old was previously sentenced, in absentia, in connection with a number of cases related to terrorism.
The convict, who is said to be one of the leaders of Saraya Al Ashtar, is currently at large and believed to be living in Iran.
