MANAMA: Information and communications technology’s (ICT) transformative potential in shaping the digital economy and nurturing the Fourth Industrial Revolution will be the theme of a major conference in Bahrain this December.
The sixth edition of the Arab ICT Forum 2020 will be held on December 14 as a virtual event, said the organisers – the ICT Committee of the Federation of Arab Engineers and the Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE).
The event is taking place under the patronage of Telecommunications Regulatory Authority chairwoman Mariam Jumaan.
Dr Raida Al Alawi, chairwoman of the ICT Committee and the financial secretary of BSE, said, “Due to the circumstances of the new coronavirus pandemic, and following the advice and recommendations of the competent authorities, the forum’s organising committee decided to hold it as a virtual event, rather than postponing it; given the high turnout in its previous edition.”
She said the decision emphasises the importance of employing ICT; in order to challenge the social distancing restrictions imposed by the pandemic, and was welcomed by the forum organisers and sponsors.
Dr Al Alawi added, “This year, the forum has adopted the theme ‘ICT: Driver for Innovation and Sustainability’, in an effort to highlight the ICT’s transformative potential in shaping the digital economy and nurturing the Fourth Industrial Revolution; in order to make it a powerful tool capable of accelerating the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The forum includes two main themes: the first theme focuses on the ICT innovations for sustainability, while the second theme discusses ICT applications. The two themes include a number of secondary topics to be presented in the forum.”
The forum is aimed at researchers, engineers, ICT developers, educators, and representatives of government agencies and industries across the Arab world; in order to present the latest developments in the ICT field.
The platform will seek to promote the exchange of experiences, success stories and successful solutions in the ICT field among the Arab countries.
In addition, the forum promotes regional cooperation and technology transfer between the institutions and the research teams working in the ICT sector.
