Bahrain Future Society for Youth’s Smile Initiative, which provides psychosocial care to children with cancer and their parents, is now offering its services remotely to support them safely during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Safaa Al Nasser, the head of psychological support at Smile, has outlined how the group is intensifying its efforts of support.
She said: “We are keen to transfer all our programmes and events online as a commitment to precautionary measures and social distancing. We have also ensured that the sick children affiliated with the initiative interact with our activities and achieve the desired benefits.
“It’s essential for a child with cancer to obtain extensive psychological support from his family and society, in addition to the need to inspire him or her to confront the disease with courage, face reality and accept external effects such as hair-loss positively.
Difficult
“This will help him or her to overcome the difficult stages of the disease, especially the first shock, then to move forward to the stage of accepting the new situation and realising that he or she is a person who is positively distinguished from his or her peers and has a more prominent ability to give, and more ability to heal, God willing.”
The society had implemented a complete remote summer programme which included many activities and various workshops such as painting, handicrafts and more.
The initiative’s volunteers also distributed kits featuring masks, gloves and other essentials, as well as 65 electronic devices to assist them in studying remotely.
