WITH October being observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout the world, it’s also time to remember that cancer hasn’t stopped for Covid-19.
In that context, it should be noted that there has been a steady rise in breast cancer patients over the past few years in Bahrain (‘Cancer on rise among women’, GDN, October 19).
This has been attributed to increased awareness – with more women opting for screening and periodic self-examination.
However, what was surprising was to read that the Bahrain Cancer Society has not been able to update its registry of cases due to limitations enforced by Covid-19.
And that Bahrain’s national cancer registry is updated every five years!
Shouldn’t it be done every year, at the least? It would give us a better idea of the spread of the disease and comparative figures to help us assess our approach to it.
