A MAN died on the spot after slipping on the stairs of a house under construction in Karzakan yesterday.
Identified as Bangladeshi national Zuber Ahmed Miah, 40, he was working with four other men, all employees of Anwar Alaqsa Contracting, at the site.
“It was around 11am and two of us were sitting down for a break, when my partner saw Zuber fall down,” fellow worker Mohammed Shahabudeen told the GDN.
“Zuber was coming down the stairs of 20 steps with two buckets of water and he fell off from the 10th step which will be around two-and-a-half metres in height.
“There was no railing and he slipped and fell flat on his face, hurting his face and head.
“We rushed to him, but he was not moving.”
The incident was immediately reported to the supervisor, and police and ambulance were at the scene soon after.
The workers also said that Mr Miah was not wearing a hardhat, a mandatory safety gear at worksites.
Meanwhile, Mr Miah’s brother said that Budaiya Health Centre had diagnosed him with a kidney problem last month.
“We don’t know what exactly was the problem but he was asked to go to Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) and his appointment was yesterday (Monday),” he said.
“We went there at 4pm and finished all the tests and they said he was fine but was prescribed pills to be picked up from Naim Health Centre.
“We finished from SMC at 10.30pm and by the time we reached Naim it was closed, so we decided to pick up the medicine this morning.
“He was well and said that he would go in the evening as he had emergency work at the site.”
Mr Miah from Sylhet is survived by wife Fazna Beegum and two daughters Tareen, 16 and 13-year-old Taiba.
