GRAFFITI, illustrations and comic books are the theme of the 20th Week of the Italian Language in the World, which was celebrated at the Royal University of Women’s (RUW) only regional Grazia Deledda Italian Language and Culture Centre.
Italian Ambassador Paola Amadei joined RUW president Dr David Stewart and academic staff to present an award to Aisha Murad, one of the top performers in the Italian language class.
“At first, it never crossed my mind to study the Italian language,” said Ms Murad, an architecture student.
“However, my thinking changed when I realised how I would really enjoy it and how useful it may be to myself, especially as I dream of travelling to Italy for my post-graduate studies and visit all the amazing architectural and historical landmarks of the country.”
The week is celebrated during the third week of October since 2001.
Italian is the fourth most-studied language after English, Spanish and Mandarin – 2.2 million people studied it in 119 countries in 2017-18.
“Italian goes beyond the boundaries of its traditional territorial diffusion,” said Ms Amadei.
“It has established itself abroad as a language capable of transmitting to foreigners the history of Italy – the images and values of beauty, quality and humanism that constitute the foundation of a lifestyle that is appreciated and admired all over the world.”
Ms Amadei also praised the university’s efforts in providing a multi-cultural environment.
