A MAN who assaulted his friend during a drunken brawl, leaving him with broken ribs and internal bleeding resulting in his death, was yesterday jailed for 15 years.
The 50-year-old Bahraini was found guilty of manslaughter following the death of Hassan Ali Al Majnoon, aged in his 50s.
The victim’s body was found by a passer-by at a farm in Segaiya on July 14.
The High Criminal Court also jailed the victim’s 45-year-old friend for three months for not helping him and leaving him to die.
A medical examiner’s report concluded that Mr Al Majnoon’s death was not caused by him being drunk, as alleged earlier by defence lawyers.
The information was earlier provided by the expert in the trial.
Both defendants appeared in court yesterday where they earlier denied the charges.
The 50-year-old defendant initially told prosecutors that he had got into a drunken brawl with the victim, who he claimed attacked him first for no reason.
According to the medical report previously presented, the victim had a blood alcohol content of 370mg per 100ml.
“The defendant was jailed for 15 years in connection with causing the death of the victim,” read the court ruling.
“His accomplice has been given three months behind bars for not aiding the victim and leaving him to die.
“The victim died as a result of broken ribs after coming into contact with a solid object.
“He suffered from internal bleeding in the chest and abdomen.
“The high level of alcohol in his body caused him to lose balance.
“However, he died owing to injuries sustained in the attack and not from consuming alcohol.
“He died from suffocation as his ribs were broken.”
A detective investigating the case previously told the court that secret sources had led him to uncover the identity of those involved.
