A MAN has been jailed for 10 years after his mother reported him to the police for stealing more than BD25,000, including jewellery worth BD5,000 from their home in Arad.
The 35-year-old Bangladeshi used his mother’s debit card to withdraw BD16,680.
He also allegedly took jewellery worth BD5,000 and BD4,000 in cash from her drawer before fleeing the country in November last year. The High Criminal Court found him guilty of theft and fined him BD50,000 yesterday.
His mother, aged 62, reported him to authorities after she noticed that her jewellery, cash and debit card were missing from her bedroom on November 18. She then went to the bank and found that BD16,680 had been withdrawn from her account. The woman said she tried to reach out to her son over the phone.
“The defendant was found guilty due to sufficient evidence against him,” read the court ruling.
“CCTV footage taken from ATM machines, showing the defendant withdrawing the cash, was attached to court documents as evidence.”
