BAHRAIN will today mark International Volunteer Day, being held this year under the theme: “Together We Can, Through Volunteering”
The UN has designated the annual event as an opportunity to promote volunteerism, encourage governments to support volunteer efforts and recognise volunteer contributions towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local, national and international levels.
To mark the occasion, Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan commended Bahraini volunteers’ efforts to promote charity, serve the community and support official and non-governmental organisations and contribute to achieving the SDGs.
He also praised the volunteers’ efforts and pivotal role and contribution to Bahrain’s success in withstanding challenges and combating the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
“This year, the world is facing an unprecedented circumstance in contemporary life with the spread of the coronavirus”, he said, highlighting the precautionary measures taken to confront the pandemic and limit its spread.
He commended the Feena_Khair campaign, which was launched by His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, adding that the drive generated more than BD21 million within less than 24 hours.
The minister paid tributes to volunteers, NGOs and civil society institutions, hailing their contributions and crucial role in combating the pandemic.
