A warning was issued last night by the Indian Embassy.
It stated that scammers have been spoofing the embassy’s telephone number (39418071) using fake names to elicit personal information such as bank details or credit card information.
The embassy stated that the criminals are also attempting to extort money from Indian nationals through inter alia – by claiming there are errors in their passports, visa forms and immigration forms – which can be rectified by paying money.
“At the same time the fraudsters are claiming that the so-called errors, if not rectified, could result in deportation of the individual to India or their imprisonment in Bahrain,” read the statement.
“In some cases, these fraudsters have also falsely claimed that they received such privileged information from the embassy or other authorities in India.
“The embassy telephone 39418071 is a 24-hour emergency number to receive calls from distressed Indian nationals seeking assistance.
“The embassy or its officials do not make calls from this number to Indians or other countries’ citizens.”
The embassy also advices the members of the Indian community not to entertain suspicious phone calls made in the name of the Indian Embassy.
They also stressed the importance of not revealing personal information or transferring any money in response to calls.
People are urged to report matters to the embassy on the email cons.bahrain@mea.gov.in
