A GOVERNMENT employee and two others have been jailed for conning an expatriate by leasing him land which did not belong to them.
The Bahrainis, aged between 30 and 45, were found guilty of fraud by the High Criminal Court yesterday.
The government employee was jailed for two years and fined BD2,000 each. His co-defendants were jailed for six months each.
The men tricked their victim, a foreign national, into believing that they owned a land and leased it to him for an annual fee of BD1,200.
In addition they took BD15,000 which they claimed were fees for the process.
“The defendants were found guilty due to sufficient evidence against them,” read the court ruling.
“The land did not belong to them or any government body and they managed to trick their victim and pocketed his money.
“The victim then found out about the scam and reported them to authorities.
“The court heard witnesses. The defendants denied the charges in an attempt to avoid punishment.”
