AN outspoken MP yesterday urged Parliament to stop discussions on endangered animals while human beings were “on the verge of extinction” due to the impact of Covid-19.
MP Ebrahim Al Nefaei said it was strange that Parliament’s general secretariat office was listing topics on animals when people were losing jobs.
He made the remarks as MPs approved amendments made by the Shura Council to a new law protecting endangered animals and plants in Bahrain. The Organisational and Monitoring Law for International Trade of Animals and Plants on The Verge of Extinction would now be referred to His Majesty King Hamad for ratification.
“Businesses are shutting down and families are facing a huge fall in their incomes,” Mr Al Nefaei said.
“People are endangered and on the verge of extinction due to Covid-19 – not animals, and here we have this law listed,” said Mr Al Nefaei.
“There are more important laws on Bahrainisation, standards of living and people’s livelihood that need prioritisation.
“This is a waste of time!”
Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal, however, said the legislation had international significance and discussing it was not a waste of time.
