CONSTRUCTION and maintenance work at all youth and sport facilities in the country is now being handled by the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.
The move was revealed by Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Aymen Almoayed during the Parliament session yesterday.
It followed MP Ahmed Al Demistani’s claims that better negotiation skills are required to get the best deal.
He cited the budget allotted for maintenance of a football pitch in Demistan.
“The Youth and Sports Affairs Ministry had signed a contract for BD35,000. I managed to get another deal from the same contractor, for the same project, for BD16,000!” he claimed.
Mr Almoayed pledged tough action to tackle ‘foul play’ when it comes to tenders.
“The MP managed to get a better deal from the contractor, which we encourage as it saves money,” he said.
As a result of the incident, the tough bargaining has been handed over to skilled negotiators.
“Now all construction, repair and maintenance work for us is being handled by the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry due to their knowledge in the field.
“We don’t encourage foul play and will take action against every violation.”
Information Minister Ali Al Rumaihi said in response to a question by Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal that Monte Carlo and BBC Radio services were rebroadcasting from Bahrain under paid contracts. However, UAE radio channels were re-broadcasting from Bahrain for free under a mutual agreement.
