A seven-member Bahrain Boxing Federation (BBF) boxing team, including two women pugilists, leaves for Riyadh today to take part in the 2023 World Combat Games (WCG).
The WCG is an international multi-sport festival, which will run from October 20-30 and will feature 16 combat sports and martial arts competitions and sports demonstrations.
It will also host the first-ever World Martial Arts Gala which will honour the legends of combat sports and martial arts.
“The boxing tournament runs for just two days on Friday and Saturday,” BBF technical development manager and national team coach Tony Davis told the GDN.
“And we have seven boxers competing, two of whom are women. The girls will compete in the 50kg and 54kg categories while the five male boxers will fight in the 51kg, 63.5kg, 71kg, 80kg and 92+kg categories.
“This is a great opportunity for some of our boxers to excel and some of them have had good international exposure recently – in Abu Dhabi, the Asian Games in China as well as one or two domestic tournaments of lat.
“So, now, it’ll be interesting to see them step on the international ladder and we’ll see how far up they’ll go.”
