Two people have been detained for allegedly threatening and blackmailing an Egyptian university student, leading to her death.
Nineteen-year-old Arish University student, Naira El-Zoghby, is believed to have ingested pesticide tablets to end her life last week.
The Public Prosecution has ordered the detention of a man and a woman, who allegedly threatened to reveal personal information about the victim if she did not fulfil a certain demand.
The woman also threatened to publish a conversation that had been forwarded from Naira's phone to hers without consent, the prosecution said following an investigation.
She then shared the conversation with her male friend, the second accused, who allegedly addressed students in Naira's grade via Whatsapp, requesting them to select a date to release the messages as well as explicit images he claimed to possess.
The Public Prosecution has retrieved the mobile devices belonging to the victim and the suspects.
The tragic circumstances surrounding Naira's passing, which prompted public outcry and suspicions of foul play, have led the prosecution to reopen the case and exhume her body for post-mortem examination.
In Egypt, blackmail is considered a violation of an individual's personal life and is punishable by law.
Since news of the tragedy, individuals across social media platforms are advocating for measures to tackle cyberbullying.
