Al Nawayef are heavily favoured to clinch a quarter-final slot when they take on Al Saqr Al Abyadh today at 9pm in Group 3 of the Nasser 10 Football Tournament at Khalifa Sports City Football Stadium.
With six points following two wins from as many games, Al Nawayef are leading the group, while Al Saqr Al Abyadh are lagging at the bottom with three points after winning a match and losing one.
Al Nawayef need only one point to progress to the last eight as the group leaders.
In the second game of the same group, winless Forever will face Al Wehda who have three points from winning one of their two matches.
Forever, who are among the favourites to win this year’s edition, found themselves in danger of being knocked out after losing twice to drop to the bottom of the group.
They, however, still have a chance to progress by beating Al Wehda and Al Nawayef losing to Al Saqr Al Abyadh.
Late on Sunday, Al Zilzal moved closer to a quarter-final berth after beating Al Husan Al Aswad 4-2 in Group 2.
Alaa Hubail put the winners ahead 1-0 in the 13th minute, but Mohammed Al Khalaifa equalised after only six minutes.
Abdullah Al Shajar restored Al Zilzal’s lead in the 28th minute and Syrian Esra Amer extended it after the break. Al Khalaifa reduced the deficit with 10 minutes to go but Mohammed Adam converted a penalty in the 82nd minute to seal the victory for Al Zilzal who now have four points from two games.
Meanwhile, the first grand draw was held for one of the 10 cars within the package that the Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, directed to be given to the audience attending the matches of the tournament, with the sponsorship of Ebrahim Khalil Kanoo and Majestic Cars.
