BAHRAIN Rugby Football Club’s (RFC) first XV squad were put through their paces at Kandy Sports Club last night, ahead of their maiden competitive fixture on Sri Lankan soil tonight in the Rugby West Asia Champions League.
Although last weekend’s draw between Kandy and Abu Dhabi Harlequins – who beat Bahrain 36-32 in the opening round – means ‘Quins have already retained the title, this fixture has long been billed as a significant one for Louie Tonkin’s side in preparation for the upcoming West Asia Premiership campaign.
As such, Tonkin has named arguably his strongest possible line-up, although a number of injury concerns in recent weeks have somewhat forced his hand.
In all, the side shows six changes and one further positional switch from that which went down to Harlequins two weeks ago, with a number of players backing up after appearing for the Select XV in their defeat of Kuwait last weekend.
Davis Tui marks his first senior start since suffering an injury against Dubai Hurricanes last September, and he is joined in the front row by Ollie Sanson - in a rare start at hooker - and Rich Muncaster.
Engine
Summer signing Jon Kenny is joined in the engine room by Mark Burnell, with veteran Rich Wilkinson starting for a third consecutive week in a third different position on the blindside flank. Alastair Crombie and Jack Sale complete the back-row.
Rob Bennett and Luke Radley renew their half-back partnership while skipper Adam Wallace is partnered in the centre by Dai Evans in his first start for the club.
Terrence Tantoh and Deina Morete are on the wings, with Iwan Phillips named at full-back after an impressive first couple of weeks in Bahrain colours.
On bench, Lindsey Gibson, Matt McKee and Max Sale will provide ample cover for the forwards while Shane Stapleton, Joel Lewis, Graham Bishop and Greg Heath will be looking to make an impact in an increasingly-competitive back-line.
