IT was a brave decision by His Majesty King Hamad to write an article in the Western Press (Washington Times), explaining the essence and values of Bahrain’s society through the ages.
His initiative is unprecedented.
Undoubtedly, for the nation’s sovereign to openly philosophise in one of America’s leading newspapers, potentially opens the door to great dialogues. Learned Western men and women of all faiths may now be encouraged to re-read and re-study the tolerance of Islam and Moslems throughout Mankind’s history.
Unfortunately, most Westerners know little or nothing about Islam. Their impressions are mostly formed by reports of the rantings of fanatics who represent less than one per 1,000 Moslems.
The sad truth is, however, that bad news travels very fast!
In this time and age, understanding each other should be on every educational curriculum, because only through sound, reliable information and knowledge can this world’s peoples become more appreciative of each other.
His Majesty’s noble act will hopefully prove the first step in a wider discussion.
Let us all bear in mind that Bahrain has always offered a debating platform, respecting all faiths and shades of opinion.
And we in the national Press salute His Majesty for reaching out and reinforcing this country’s values to the world at large.
