Kuwait City: Kuwait government’s amnesty allowing illegal expatriate workers to regulate their situation has been extended by two months to April 22.
Under the new deadline, foreigners are required either to correct their situation or leave the country with penalties.
Kuwait Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Shaikh Khalid Al-Jarrah had announced the grace period, which started on Monday (January 29) and expires tomorrow (February 22).
According to official statistics, the number of illegal workers living in Kuwait tops 154,000.
The Kuwaiti authorities have extended the 25-day amnesty as the number of illegal foreigners who turned up to regulate their situation was below expectations.
A total of 2,500 Filipinos have already left Kuwaiti while 1,000 are finalising their departure procedures, out of 10,000 illegal workers from the Philippines.
