Car number plates could soon go digital in Dubai, Khaleej Times reported.
Called “Tag to Connect”, the new-look smart screen will replace the current metallic plate, said Sultan Abdullah Al Marzouqi, Roads and Transport Authority's (RTA) director of Vehicle Licensing Department.
He made the statement on the sidelines of the Future Cities Show, which opened today in the city.
Motorists whose cars are fitted with digital plates will not need to go to any RTA service centre every year to renew the car registration as it will be automatically renewed after passing the technical test.
Motorists will even have the luxury of changing their number plates anytime they like through the RTA app or by ordering from the RTA website without any hassles.
The car equipped with the digital plate will flash 'stolen' if someone tries to carjack the vehicle or steal the digital plate.
"The digital plate will also allow vehicles to connect with each other - that's why it's Tag to Connect - meaning, motorists can exchange information on traffic conditions or if there is an accident on the road. All this information will be connected to the central command system of the RTA," Al Marzouqi told Khaleej Times.
RTA officials will start testing the smart car number plates from next month until November.
