MPS yesterday rejected an amendment to the 1965 Immigration and Residency Law which would have forced the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) to create a fund to pay for the repatriation of illegal workers who can’t afford plane tickets.
They said such a provision could be abused by unscrupulous employers who would simply sack expatriate staff without providing them with plane tickets home .
