Cairo - A series aired on an Egyptian TV channel during the month of Ramadan has strained diplomatic relations between Cairo and Khartoum.
Sudan foreign ministry summoned the Egyptian ambassador in Khartoum and handed him over a memo of protest against the TV series “Abu Amr Al-Masri” which “brands some Egyptian nationals in Sudan as terrorists”.
“Egyptian citizens are living in Sudan, with the knowledge of the Cairo authorities under a joint agreement to facilitate the movement of citizens between the two countries”, said the ministry, adding that there are daily flights and more than 50 daily buses and vehicles between the two countries.”.
The ministry said that the series misleads viewers into believing that some areas of Sudan were the scene of some of the events featuring in the series, using Sudanese cars’ plates, which is a sovereign symbol and cannot be dealt with only after obtaining approval from the Sudanese authorities.”
The ministry issued a statement affirming that no Egyptian national was involved in any terrorist activities whatsoever. It underlined strong coordination between the military, security and police agencies between the two countries.
