BAHRAIN’S Olympic football team have left for Myanmar to take part in the Alpine Cup 2018.
The international friendly tournament will be taking place from tomorrow to Sunday in the capital, Naypyidaw.
Along with Bahrain and the host nation, their under-23 Olympic counterparts from Thailand and South Korea will also be taking part.
The Bahrainis are using the event as a part of their preparations for the upcoming 18th Asian Games, which are scheduled to take place in late August in Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia.
Bahrain play their first match on the opening day of competition tomorrow, as they take on Thailand while the South Koreans face off with the home side.
On Friday, the Thais clash with the South Koreans, while Bahrain take on the hosts.
The third and final day of action on Sunday will see Bahrain and South Korea go head to head in the first fixture followed by Thailand and Myanmar battling it out in the second.
Following the single round-robin, the team with the most points from their three matches played will be crowned champions. The winners will receive a $10,000 cash prize.
Head coach Samir ben Chammam has named a 23-player squad for the Alpine Cup. Following their tournament campaign, the team will travel directly to Indonesia for the final lead-up to the start of the men’s football tournament at the Asian Games.
Bahrain are in Group ‘E’ at the Asiad. They are alongside South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia and the UAE. The competition is scheduled to begin on August 10.
