Seven inmates convicted of assaulting an on-duty traffic policeman were lashed publicly in Jeddah at the same location where the officer was attacked, Saudi Gazette reported.
The criminal court sentenced an 18-year-old Saudi, a Nigerian, two Yemenis and three undocumented Chadian residents to 1,500 lashes each and a combined 80 years in prison.
The court convicted them of attacking the officer, as well as a security guard who came to his rescue at Al Hamra Corniche in southwest Jeddah about a year and a half ago.
The convicts were sentenced from 15 to 18 years in jail. Three other defendants were sentenced from three to five years in connection with the same case, which dates back to March 2017.
They all appeared in a video riding four-wheel all-terrain vehicles and attacking the traffic policeman after he prevented them from entering a recreational area on the Corniche.
When a security guard from a nearby private establishment tried to help the police officer, one of the bikers attacked him as well.
