A 2014 Indian multilingual legal drama film, Court, comes to the screen at Bahrain Cinema Club tonight at 7pm.
The story follows an elderly folk singer and grassroots organiser, dubbed the ‘people’s poet’, who is arrested on a trumped-up charge of inciting a sewage worker to commit suicide.
His trial is a ridiculous and harrowing display of institutional incompetence, with endless procedural delays, coached witnesses for the prosecution, and obsessive privileging of arcane colonial law over reason and mercy.
Directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, the film won the Orizzonti Award for Best Film and the Luigi De Laurentiis (Lion of the Future) award at its premiere at the 71st Venice International Film Festival.
