Riyadh: Oman denied reports of holding a referendum to decide whether or not to remain part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
An official source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat denied reports by dismissing them as mere ‘street’ discussions.
“No Omani official or politician said that,” the source said.
He added that some Omani officials were only praising the democratic UK’s Brexit referendum and added that ‘their statements were blown out proportion,’ reported local Arabic daily Akhbar 24.
The source told Kuwaiti Arabic newspaper Alrai that the GCC member states are determined to consolidate joint work and extend cooperation.
Former Omani Shura Council Deputy Speaker Is’haq Al-Seyabi had posted a comment on his Twitter account calling for a referendum on Oman’s membership in the GCC bloc.
