ROYAL College of Surgeons of Ireland–Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) claimed the title in the 2016 RCSI Bahrain Basketball Championship.
RCSI beat the much-fancied Al Qadseya 85-84 in a thrilling final.
Al Qadseya seemed to have sealed the final as they took a three-point lead with only one second left on the clock.
But Zaid Marcos’ shot from deep inside his own half sailed straight into the basket to tie the game 73-73.
Buoyed by the unlikely reprieve, the RCSI Bahrain boys held on through overtime against their more experienced opponents – who had a number of former professional and national team players among their ranks – to complete a sensational victory.
Ten men teams from companies, social groups and other organisations around the country took part in the second edition of RCSI Bahrain Basketball Championship which kicked off in February.
Split into two groups of five, the teams battled it out in a round-robin format, with the bottom-placed team eliminated before the knockout stages and the eight remaining facing off in seeded quarter-finals.
Earlier RCSI Bahrain rallied from 21 points down in the final quarter to take an unlikely 66-65 victory over American Mission Hospital (AMH).
They followed that up with a 77-68 win over Trexsol in the semi-final. Al Qadseya scored over Four Brothers (73-60) and Old Days (90-69) before the final.
It was a great night for RCSI Bahrain and coach Abbas Almass’ as Zaid Marcos was declared the MVP while Kinan Alriyahi took the top-scorer award.
