The UAE’s telecom operators have banned the recently introduced voice and video calling feature on Snapchat 2.0.
Following an update in software, the social messaging app users could chat with their friends on voice or video calls.
However, this new feature in the app’s latest update is against UAE’s VoIP regulations.
It bans third-party providers from providing internet based telephony services.
In a statement to Emirates 24/7 confirming the move, a spokesperson with the Dubai-based du said: “Companies wishing to provide [VoIP] services should coordinate with the UAE’s licensed service providers in this regard.”
A TRA’s statement said: “Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are considered part of the UAE’s regulated activities. The TRA has granted licensed operators the eligibility to provide such services across their networks. Companies wishing to provide such services should coordinate with the UAE’s licensed service providers in this regard.”
Even though, VoIP services from unlicensed operators are banned, many use Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to get access to blocked telecom services.
Operating a VPN is legal in the UAE, However, using it to access banned services is not permissible.
