A more common type of mackerel called saba is being fed to the penguins instead of the usual aji, or Japanese horse mackerel, which they find less appetising.
In a video from All-Nippon News Network, the penguins can be seen turning their beaks away when a caretaker offers them the alternative fish.
“They hold it in their beaks at first, but then they decide they don’t like it and drop it,” said aquarium head Hiroki Shimamoto. “They sense something is off.”
Otters at the aquarium have responded similarly, as per the video.
And just like everyone else, the Hakone-en Aquarium in Japan has had to make cuts to make ends meet. But, the residents of the aquarium don't seem to be happy with this change.
Specifically, the penguins.
In the video that's now gone viral, penguins at the Hakone-en Aquarium can be seen rejecting a cheaper type of fish than what they're accustomed to feeding on, effectively protesting their caretakers' attempts to cope with inflation.
