JIU-JITSU – EIGHT fighters from Bahrain’s Reza Monfaradi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Team scooped up nine medals between them, including three gold, in the Dammam Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024, held in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
Wahid Abdulhamid led the squad by clinching two medals, including one gold and a silver medal. The other gold medals were claimed by teammates Salman Subah and Yousuf Mercer.
Three silver medals were bagged by Naser Alshowaikh, Muhamed Elshamy and Khaled Faraj, while two bronze medals were won by Hasan Abdulla and Mamdoh Haek.
Abdulhamid won his gold in the men’s masters, purple belt, under-69kg division. He added his silver in the men’s adult, purple belt, under-69kg category after Hassan Alkhayat of Saudi Arabia took the gold, winning their final match on points 11-2. Abdulhamid’s teammate and fellow-Bahraini Abdulla won his bronze medal in the same bracket.
Subah captured his title in the men’s adult, white belt, above-94kg class. He defeated teammate Elshamy from the US by submission in their deciding bout.
Mercer secured the squad’s third gold medal in the boys’ teens, grey belt, under-52kg division. He defeated Abdullah Aljeraibia of Saudi Arabia by submission in their final.
Amongst the other silver-medallists, Alshowaikh stepped onto the podium in the men’s adult, white belt, under-85kg category. He had a narrow defeat by submission to Brazilian Flaudizio Brandao in their final clash.
Faraj came away with his silver medal in the men’s adult, brown belt, above-94kg class. He lost on points 0-6 in the decider to Dyaa Badran of Egypt.
Haek, from the US, picked up his bronze medal in the men’s adult, white belt, under-69kg category. He had lost to eventual silver-medallist Hassan Alsaeedi of Saudi Arabia in the semi-finals by submission.
The total haul from Dammam was the second competition in as many days in which Reza Monfaradi BJJ Team members claimed multiple medals in a leading jiu-jitsu event. On Friday, they had also taken home six medals, including four gold, at the AJP Tour Doha International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024-Gi and No-Gi in Qatar.
