CUE SPORTS – BAHRAIN’S cueists continued to excel in the West Asian Snooker and Billiards Championships 2024, currently being hosted by the kingdom.
On the second day of action, Bahrainis Munther Al Basri, Habib Subah and Khalil Ibrahim all advanced to the last 12 of the men’s singles snooker tournament.
Al Basri defeated Oman’s Sami Al Hamurashdi 3-0 and also won 3-2 against Kuwait’s Ahmed Abel to book his place in the ensuing stage from Group F in the preliminary round.
In Group A, Subah lost to Iran’s Ali Roshanikya 1-3 but had already won his first match against Meqdad Murad Taqi of Kuwait, which was enough to send him through.
Ibrahim followed suit in Group D, where he won against Yemeni Haitham Al Hammadi 3-0 but lost to Jordanian Moath Al Majali 2-3. He was still able to advance.
In the under-21 singles snooker competition, Bahrainis Abdulla Al A’ali and Hussain Aqeel were eliminated from further title contention. Al A’ali lost to Iraqi Qasim Hussain 2-3 while Aqeel fell to Iran’s Tirdad Ziadpour 0-3 to bow out.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles nine-ball billiards tournament, Bahrain’s Ibrahim Al Qiad beat compatriot Ali Abdulkarim 9-6 and also won against Iraqi Mohamed Al Amin 9-8. Fellow-Bahraini Ibrahim Ghuloom lost 2-9 to Iranian Arya Falahati, while Mohammed Al Fahal lost 6-9 to Qatari Bashar Hussain. Bahrain’s Ali Abdulkarim also suffered a defeat, losing to Qatari Abdullatif Fawal 6-9.
In juniors’ singles nine-ball billiards, Haider Maroom and Hussain Maroom continued their winning ways. Haider defeated Iraqi Abdulla Lafta 7-4 and Saudi Mishari Al Shamardal 7-2, while Hussain also won against Al Shamardal 7-1 and beat Iraqi Ahzi Adnan 7-2.
Action in the West Asian championships continues today and will be held in Bahrain until Saturday.
