Los Angeles: Facebook is doubling down on live video streaming by extending the ability to go live to its Android app.
The company will start to make live streaming on Android available to U.S.-based users next week, announced Facebook product manager Vadim Lavrusik and Facebook engineering manager Dave Capra in a blog post on Friday.
Facebook is also working on extending live streaming to additional markets.
The feature is now available in more than 30 countries, and will become available in more countries in the coming weeks.
Facebook first started to allow celebrities to stream live video to their followers last summer.
In December, it started to open up live streaming to ordinary users, and last month, it made the feature available to all iPhone users in the U.S.
Embracing live video is the logical next step for Facebook as it aims to ramp up video viewing across its network.
On Friday, Lavrusik and Capra revealed that the company's foray into live video is already paying off with much longer viewing times, "We've seen that on average people watch a live video more than three times longer when it is live compared to when it is not live," they wrote.
