A Pennsylvania man has set a new Guinness World Record after watching 777 movies at theatres within the span of a year.
32-year-old Zachariah Swope watched the movies between May 7, 2022 and May 7, 2023. His efforts were for a good cause though – raising awareness about mental health issues.
Typically, watching nearly 800 movies at theatres would have cost someone thousands of dollars. However, Zachariah had taken an unlimited membership of Regal Cinemas in Harrisburg, and hence the endeavour only cost him around $200-$300.
He didn’t spend money on snacks either. The official Guinness World Records guidelines state that you cannot take any bathroom or snack breaks during the movie.
Zachariah started his record-breaking run with Minions: Rise of Gru and ended with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny a year later.
The avid cinephile reportedly watched around three movies after work on weekdays, with more on the weekends. The movie he’s watched the most was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, sitting through 47 screenings of the animated feature throughout the year.
The staff at Regal Cinemas were also supportive of his world record attempt, screening movies for him whenever and wherever he wanted.
To celebrate the record, Regal Cinemas donated $7,777.77 to the American Federation for Suicide Prevention.
The old record stood at 715 movies.
