SWIMMING – A team of swimmers from St Christopher’s School Bahrain recently returned from Dubai with an impressive medal haul from one of the biggest schools and clubs competitions in the Gulf.
The St Chris swim team, nicknamed the “Sharks”, bagged a total of 14 medals at the GCC-BSME Swimming Championships 2024.
The event was organised by St Christopher’s School Bahrain at Dubai’s Hamdan Sports Complex, with the participation of nearly 900 swimmers from 35 schools across the Gulf.
The “Sharks” featured 10 junior students and 19 seniors, and they came away with six medals in the individual races and another eight in the team events.
Naomi Ghorayeb captured the squad’s lone gold in the girls’ eight-and-under 50 metres butterfly. The talented youngster also came away with two silver medals in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly, as well as a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle.
Kensi Bowring added a bronze medal in the girls’ eight-and-under 200m freestyle, while Dora Buklu clinched a bronze medal in the girls’ 13-14 100m breaststroke.
Amongst the team accolades, the “Sharks” captured eight bronze medals.
Also as part of their medal haul, the St Chris swimmers earned 34 top-six places and achieved 63 personal best times.
Naomi and Kensi were part of the junior “Sharks”, along with Luisa Hirst, Pearl Jacobs, Ivor Kelly, Emily Hopkins, Pierce Kelly, Thomas Kent, Dunia Naser, and Cooper Phin.
The seniors included Dora, Raheem Ahmad, Dania Alajmi, Aylin Atak, Senan Fennell, Ara Gaynor, Raphael Ghorayeb, Liam Hattingh, Edward Hirst, Madeleine Hopkins, Megan Johnson, Ayona Kaushik, Oliver Kent, Abigail Moore, Dahlia Naser, Stepan Peterson, Jennah Robson, Kayla Robson, and Henry Williams.
The St Christopher’s School Bahrain team that organised the event was headed by coach Yavor Zahariev, with the help of Sunmarke School Dubai and British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) representatives.
