BASKETBALL – Bahrain representatives Riffa ranked sixth overall yesterday to end the season-opening event of the Fiba 3x3 World Tour 2025 in Utsunomiya, Japan.
Riffa had to settle for their place amongst the top eight after bowing out of further title contention in the quarter-final stage. There, they narrowly lost 12-13 to Amsterdam RABOBANK from the Netherlands.
A basket from Bryan Alberts with a minute and 31 seconds remaining proved to be crucial, as it gave the Dutch a 13-11 lead. Jonas Foerts replied for Riffa to reduce the deficit to one with 31 seconds to play, but the kingdom’s side could not manage a tying or winning basket as time expired.
Foerts finished as Riffa’s lead man in the low-scoring affair with six points, while Caspar Augustijnen added five and Vic Van Oosterwyck scored one point.
Worthy de Jong paced Amsterdam RABOBANK with eighth markers, while Jan Driessen had three and Alberts two.
Riffa were classified sixth on the final standings as Miami from the US were crowned champions. They defeated Amsterdam RABOBANK in the final 21-17. Ub from Serbia finished third, Toulouse from France fourth, and Raudondvaris Hoptrans of Lithuania fifth.
Partizan of Serbia and Vienna of Austria were classified behind Riffa to complete the top eight.
The Fiba 3x3 World Tour is the premier street basketball series, held under the banner of the International Basketball Federation (Fiba). It will be making 15 stops worldwide this season, with the series finale set to be held in Bahrain this November 21 and 22.
It will be the first time ever that the kingdom will be staging the curtain-closer, in which this year’s Fiba 3x3 World Tour champions will be crowned.
