Ethel Caterham, born in Hampshire in 1909, has become the first Briton to claim the title of world’s oldest person since 1987.
The 115-year-old who lives in a care home in Lightwater, Surrey, revealed that the secret to her longevity is simple: “I do what I like.”
She claimed the Guinness World Records title as the oldest living person in the world after the previous holder, Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun, died on Wednesday at the age of 116.
Caterham said, “I’ve taken everything in my stride, the highs and lows, “adding that she goes by the axiom of “never arguing with anyone.” Instead, “I listen and I do what I like,” she told the BBC Radio.
The witty woman has lived in Surrey for 50 years and has three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. She revealed, “I’ve been all over the world, and I’ve ended up in this lovely home, where everyone is falling over themselves for me, giving me everything I want.”
