CHESS – THE ISB@75 Chess Championship, commemorating the Platinum Jubilee of The Indian School Bahrain (ISB), is all set to begin today. Organised under the patronage of the Bahrain Chess Federation and in collaboration with Arjun’s Chess Academy (ACA), this two-day event is to be held at the Jashanmal Auditorium at ISB’s Isa Town campus.
This landmark competition aims to foster the intellectual spirit of chess while celebrating 75 years of ISB’s dedication to academic excellence. With nearly 250 participants and 60 school teams registered, it is set to be one of the largest chess tournaments ever hosted in the kingdom.
The event opens with a free chess workshop today from 7pm to 8.30pm, open to all students and parents. Led by expert coaches from ACA, the workshop will provide an engaging introduction to chess fundamentals, cognitive benefits of the game, and practical tips for nurturing chess learning at home. The session promises to be enriching for both beginners and experienced players.
The competitive segment of the event will take place tomorrow, starting at 9am, with the Inter-School Team Chess Championship.
Schools will compete in two categories – under-12 and under-19 – with the option to field multiple four-member teams.
The championship will be played in accordance with Fide Rapid Rules in a Swiss league format. Trophies and certificates will be awarded to the top three teams in each category.
Later tomorrow afternoon at 3pm, the Open Rapid Chess Tournament will commence. Open to players of all ages, this event will feature seven rounds, with a time control of 10 minutes plus three seconds per move. Prizes will be awarded across multiple categories, with special recognition for the top 10 players.
All matches will adhere strictly to Fide guidelines. The closing ceremony will be held at 8pm tomorrow.
