ATHLETICS – Bahrain's superstar hurdler Kemi Adekoya is scheduled to race tonight in the women’s 400 metres hurdles at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial-Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix, taking place in Budapest, Hungary.
The meeting is a gold-level event on this year’s World Athletics Continental Tour.
Adekoya is set to compete amongst a star-studded, nine-runner field. Headlining the cast of participants is reigning 400m hurdles world champion Femke Bol of the Netherlands.
Adekoya will be running the event for the fourth time this season. She had earlier this month competed over the same distance in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where she won in 56.04s. Her season’s best is 55.32s, which is still far from her personal best of 53.09s, which is presently an Asian and national record. She had set the mark in the previous edition of the World Athletics Championships, held in 2023 in Budapest.
The rest of the field in tonight’s race, scheduled for a 6.34pm start, Bahrain time, includes Amalie Iuel from Norway, Sara Mato from Hungary, Shiann Salmon from Jamaica, Savannah Sutherland from Canada, Naomi van der Broeck from Belgium, and Jasmine Jones and Bianca Stubler, both from the US.
Adekoya is one of the kingdom’s top athletes. The 32-year-old has won multiple titles over her career. She is a former world indoor champion, an Asian and Arab champion and a multi-time Asian Games gold-medallist, a Diamond League race winner, and a World Military Games gold-medallist.
